How our cashews are made

From raw cashew nut to vacuum-packed kernel, every step happens at established Vietnamese processors.

Where it grows

Bình Phước province grows most of Vietnam’s raw cashew nuts, with more coming from neighbouring Đồng Nai. The region’s processors handle raw nuts year-round, so kernels are available in every season.

Processing

Raw nuts are steamed, shelled, dried, peeled and then graded by hand and machine into wholes, splits and pieces. Kernels are sorted by size and color into the standard W, SW, WS and LP grades.

Packing and container loads

Kernels are packed in 50 lb (22.68 kg) vacuum tins or nitrogen-flushed foil bags, two per carton, to keep them crisp in transit. A 20-foot container holds 700 cartons, about 15.9 tonnes. Roasted and salted cashews and private-label packs are available on request.

Season, shipping and documents

  • Raw cashew harvest February to May; kernels ship year-round
  • Loading at Tiên Sa Port, Da Nang or Cát Lái, Ho Chi Minh City
  • FOB, CFR or CIF to your destination port
  • Third-party inspection by SGS, Vinacontrol or your surveyor

What do cashew grades like W320 mean?

What is the most traded cashew grade?

W320 is the most widely traded grade worldwide. It offers a good balance of kernel size and price for snacking, retail packs and food manufacturing.

What is the difference between W and SW cashews?

W grades are white wholes. SW grades are scorched wholes, which are slightly darker from longer roasting during shelling. They taste the same and cost less, which suits roasting and processing.

How many cartons of cashews fit in a 20-foot container?

700 cartons of 50 lb (22.68 kg), about 15.9 tonnes.

How are the cashews packed?
